so two thousand and late

blazer, thrifted.
top and pants, H&M.
boots, Marshall's.

My foray into dark colors hasn't really happened yet; I'm still negotiating with my beloved brights and neons and working things out.

I've been dying to wear that neon top with those pastel peach pants ever since I brought that top home a couple months ago, and I'm loving it.

Happy weekend!

an affair to remember

cardigan, New York & Co.
tank and skirt, Old Navy.
shoes, gift.
necklace, selfmade.

jacket, thrifted.
top, selfmade.
skirt, thrifted shorts->skirt diy.
boots, Marshall's.

The weather has dipped below 70°, school is in full swing, and I can finally wear my boots and cardigans again. All is right in the world!

If you know me at all, you know I'm in love with bright colors, and wear them despite rainy or wintery weather, when the universe seems to have this power over other people, telling them to dress as dreary as the weather is. It makes no sense to me, really. Why wouldn't you want a bright yellow umbrella to brighten up a rainy day? What is the point of a boring, black umbrella?

Then again, I've been recently obsessed with darks -- rich, "fall" colors -- and wonder to myself if this relationship with brights and prints and color on color can last forever.

As a supporter of open marriages, perhaps I can convince bright colors that I need to have an affair with the dark side, but that it won't mean that bright colors aren't my one true love.

Still trying to find a good place to take photos in my new apartment - the windows are tiny and not so plentiful, so lighting is hard, but we do have a backyard, so when I have time and a buddy, outdoor photos are totally happening,

Stay tuned for before and afters of all my apartment decor projects!

Happy end of summer days! But seriously, Happy with a capital H. Because although summer is great, I am dying to start school.

neon summer

blazer, thrifted (studs - diy'd)
top, H&M
skirt, H&M
flatforms, Marshall's
sunglasses, Urban Outfitters
earrings, Kate Spade, gifted
watch, Aldo

Things I became obsessed with this summer:
below-the-knee skirts
this skirt (which is even more neon in real life, I promise)
flatforms
neon
oversized stud earrings
this watch
buns

Haven't taken an outfit picture in almost two months! But I'm heading back to Providence tomorrow to kick off SENIOR YEAR with a BANG so I'll be taking more outfit pictures, I swear! (And hopefully I'll have stories to share and some real writing to post.)

foodie summer 2012: turkey and mushrooms on rice

How do people come up with creative names for dishes? I'm not a chef or even a cook - I mostly just throw a bunch of things together and call it a day. But since the apartment I'm subletting is so well-equipped with the quintessential white bowls and plates necessary for food photography, I thought I'd give it a try.

We had some leftover turkey from our turkey sliders, so I cut them up into bite size pieces and sauteed them with some mushrooms and the frozen grilled corn from Trader Joe's. Then, I added balsamic vinegar, dijon mustard, tomato sauce, and white wine to create a sort of gravy.

just pink

shirt, thrifted.
dress, H&M.
shoes, Kors via Crossroads Trading, Williamsburg.
watch, Aldo.

Yesterday, my roomie and I ventured to Brooklyn Flea in Williamsburg, shopped around at Artists & Fleas, and then did some thrifting at Crossroads Trading. All amazing places to shop, especially Crossroads Trading, where the clothing is great, and the prices are actually affordable.

The one thing I miss about suburbia is the endless amount of amazing finds I always take home with me from Salvation Army. And for extremely cheap prices. But in cities, large ones like New York, and even smaller ones, like Providence, the Salvation Army stores are too often ransacked by hipsters and vintage store owners, leaving nothing good for the rest of us who don't mind browsing for hours to find that one amazing sequin blazer for only five dollars. I refuse to spend eighty dollars on a dress that I could easily find for four dollars in my hometown.

Does anyone know of a good, real cheap thrift store in New York/Brooklyn?

flats, H&M.
earrings, freebie.
bracelets, gift/freebies.

It's finally getting sunny and summerHOTHOTHOT in the next few days, which is a million times better than the cloudy, rainy, humid dreariness we've been forced to live with.

And actually, the hotter it gets, the more I'll wear my favorite blazers and jackets and cardigans, because it'll be so chilly in our air-conditioned offices.

making up for lost color

shirt, thrifted.

In order to compensate for the lack of color of Friday's outfit, I had to do a one-eighty today. Fun, neon, geometric, light, bright, wacky.

foodie summer 2012: turkey sliders

Trader Joe's sells mini hamburger buns. Duh, I couldn't resist.

My roomie and I did some collaborative cooking tonight and made extra delicious turkey sliders, with caramelized onions and mushroom relish. And lots of sriracha on top, obviously.

There was the juicyness of the turkey, the sweetness of the onion, the sourness of the lime juice (in the mushroom relish), and the spicyness of the sriracha.

So profesh.

Black and White

blouse, F21
skirt, H&M
shoes, UO
necklace, Aldo

Today I'm black and white all over in honor of my monochrome friend slash co-intern who only wears black and sometimes other neutrals. And it was so hard. I just had to throw on a neon necklace and put on some bright lipstick. SO HARD, I think I'm going to have to over compensate for the next week and wear CRAZY COLOR.

Have an amazing weekend!

4. Got cupcakes at Georgetown Cupcake Soho! Best cupcakes in the world, duh.

first day

blazer, thrifted.
top, F21.
belt, thrifted.
skirt, thrifted culottes --> diy hi-lo skirt.
shoes, Necessary Clothing.

I really missed working at Hearst Tower - it's amazing to be back. It's a beautiful building, and I got to have lunch with my friend from my internship last year, and my boss is so nice, and I hope I get the chance to work there for real when I become a real person.

It's oddly cold for June, but at least that means I won't be nasty and sweaty on the subway platforms, at least for now. And it's the nice kind of cold where any clothing will do - it's (mostly) warm enough for all-out summer clothes, but it's cold enough for winter clothes too (a guy in the elevator today was wearing a puffy coat!).

And, today, the Sweetery truck was giving out free desserts to Hearst employees at lunch time! It was amazing - cookies and mini cheesecakes and other yumminess, all made with Maker's Mark bourbon.

foodie summer 2012: lamb noodle soup

I moved into New York on Saturday with the help of my dad, who drove me down from our home upstate, and carried my heavy things up to my 3rd floor apartment, and took me grocery shopping. (Thanks, dad!) And of course, we went to Flushing, Queens for dinner (and so he could buy lots of Asian liquor to bring home).

We ended up ordering far too much food for just the two of us, so I brought home the leftovers. One was a lamb dish, seasoned with cumin and cilantro. So salty and overseasoned - perfect to make into soup.

HOW IT'S MADE
boiled some water
threw in some noodles (spaghetti) and the lamb
added a touch of soy sauce and a lot of sriracha
wilted some mixed greens into the broth
cook until noodles are done!
add more sriracha, duh.
eat. with chopsticks.

belt, F21.
shoes, Michael Michael Kors via Salvation Army (best find)

I haven't graduated from college yet - I still have another year - but I stuck around for Senior Week and Commencement this year to work, hang out, and most importantly, say goodbye to my favorite class of '12ers. They had one final week to party hard, make mistakes, and check off all their unfinished college bucket list items, and then suddenly, they became real people.

On Saturday, I moved in to my summer apartment in a beautiful Brooklyn brownstone, and it's crazy to think that in a year, I'll be moving to the city for real (I hope). I can't wait to be a real person. I have plenty of goals in life, but the most important one is to live in New York. I can do any number of things, get married or be single, have kids or don't, be rich or poor, whatever, but I have to live in New York. That part doesn't change. I'm dying to graduate so I can finally move here.

But of course, I'm also excited for senior year and all that comes with it. And this is my last real summer!

I start my summer internship tomorrow, so real outfit posts are coming, I promise.

Congratulations to the class of 2012!

socks should never match

OCCASION none/class/field trip to local painting studios
DETAILS Old Navy dress, UO shoes, thrifted blazer, freebie necklace
THOUGHTS something about this dress was twisted weirdly so i had to keep adjusting it, but overall, this was comfortable - all these pieces are common go-tos for me.

Today, in painting class, we went to check out a couple studios of local painters, Martin Smick and Kirsten Lamb, (Brown and RISD alums!) which were both really awesome to see, and it was also cool to meet the artist and hear them talk about their work and especially what it's like to actually be an artist as a career. I highly recommend checking out their work!

accessories

Somewhere between middle school and now, I forgot about jewelry. But I LOVE jewelry. I used to wear earrings every day without fail. But that was before I even turned thirteen, and I must have gotten lazy or boring. But I missed them.

My mid-semester (or whatever) resolution is to be more daring in how I dress. Test the boundaries of what I can and can't pull off. Dress like a fashion editor.

That goes for jewelry and accessories too, whether it's piling on necklaces/rings/bracelets, or wearing crazy shoes/scarves/hats/bags, or investing in some gorgeous statement pieces.

catching up

After majorly ditching this blog for the last 3 months, I had a serious itch to watch my fingers dance and hear the clacking of a keyboard again. (As if I even wrote that much before.) But I miss this whole blogging world - I've been away from it for so long, hardly even checking my Google Reader this whole time.

What have I been doing? The first half of this semester has already come and gone (I'm on spring break right now!) but I've been doing a pretty bad job of documenting it:

sequins galore in my painting studio this semester

so much settlers of catan

my painting on display in the elevator wing of List, 5th floor

beautiful puerto rico! (january 2012)

window cave, puerto rico
This week, I'm relaxing, cleaning, watching TV, and making art! So excited.

I'm also working on building up my jewelry collection - photos to come :)

missed you!
