it's an 80s kind of day

Last night during a 6-hour sex-and-the-city-watching, room-cleaning-and-rearranging marathon, I threw my hair up into a high side ponytail because it kept getting in the way, and high side ponytails just make me wanna throw on legwarmers and a neon leotard and go to a dance party.

So today I decided to 80s it up a bit, and LEMMETELLYA it was a LOT of fun.

technicolor fun

skirt, made by me.
blazer, thrifted.
tank, forever 21.
over-the-knee socks, forever 21.
sequin brogues, forever 21.
radically awesome sunglasses, random record store in Saratoga Springs, NY.

I'm taking my sister to see Harry Potter 7 because obviously you can never see that movie too many times :)

oh lately it's so quiet

Wore this out to dinner with a friend I haven't seen since the summer.

tights, H&M.
socks, Claire's.
earrings, F21.
bag, Aldo.
skirt, thrifted.
boots, thrifted.
top, UO.
cardigan, Target.
scarf, gift.

Lately I've been O-B-S-E-S-S-E-D with over-the-knee socks. I bought two pairs yesterday (along with those earrings and that little black bag) and I was PLANNING on going to the city today and get the AA ones, but nooo the weather gods didn't want me to have them and I'm stuck at home because of this goddamn nor'easter.

Which ACTUALLY I'm really happy about because it does not snow like this where I go to school, except like one time during winter break when I'm home and it snows like this all the time. So I'm glad to bear witness to real white fluffy powder for the first time this winter.

If I can motivate myself to actually unpack my sewing machines and get shit done, then you'll be seein' alotta new outfits in the coming days and/or weeks :)

learning how to own it

self-portrait. fall 2010. oil on canvas.

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things..."
...like dreaded New Year's resolutions. But I know exactly what mine is going to be this time around.

Recently, a good friend said to me, "This year, I'm all about owning it and loving who I am."

I've been thinking about it ever since. Especially because I know she's not just saying it - last year she was quiet, shy, a little awkward. But this year, she's hott (with two t's) and she knows it. H-O-T-T: sexy, confident, and knows she's completely kickass in every way, and everyone else can plainly see it too. She's totally comfortable with who she is, and it's amazing to see that in a 19-year-old woman. (I would know - I'm a 19-year-old woman myself! And lemme tell ya, that kind of awe-inspiring confidence doesn't come easy).

Recently, another friend said to me, "I don't think you have a lot of confidence."

I've been thinking about this ever since too. Because I was caught off-guard - I've never been told that before in that way, point-blank. In fact, I've been told quite the opposite. So of course I thought for a long time about why this friend would believe something that I couldn't see. Maybe I was in denial about how much self-esteem I possessed, but is that even possible? Can you build up fake confidence so well that even you can't see it? Is one person all it takes to see right through that fake confidence and deflate it just like that?

No. I don't think fake confidence can exist. You can certainly fake confidence, but that's derived from real confidence, to trust in your ability to show others how freaking awesome you are. And maybe you shake off initial nerves with a bit of self-promotion and an Ugly-Betty-esque personal pep-talk, but once people see that confidence, phoney or not, they react and only serve to boost it until it manifests itself into your one-and-only, true and bonafide self-esteem.

So, in shaking off that one person's comment about my seeming lack of self-esteem, and in taking that other person's truly inspiring words to heart:

This year, I'm all about owning it and loving who I am.

Which I realize may sound totally cliché, but hey, being cliché is who I am, and I'm all about owning it now, aren't I?

PS: happy christmas!
PPS: what are your resolutions?

two more finals and i'll be back, i promise!

It has been a Really Really Really Long Ass Time.
Like, more than a month!? what?!

It's because school got really busy, I got really uninspired, I stopped reading other blogs altogether and never put much thought into what I wore. But have no fear!

Tomorrow I have two finals: Chinese and contemporary art history, and then I'm DONE with the semester! I'll be hanging around campus for a few more days, working and relaxing, packing and having fun, and then it's back home to lame-o upstate New York on Saturday. Let's hope this winter break brings you new DIY projects, new outfit ideas and more writing for you to read :)

Let's get y'all updated on my life in the last five weeks or so:
Thanksgiving feast, dorm-style.
it took a really long time for him to stack those lumpy clementines
After five years of trying to see them live, I FINALLY got to see OK Go in concert and now I am newly obsessed to the MAX.
It was a really epic show. And Damian Kulash <3 <3 <3 I love you <3
Adios,  Painting I, you were good to me. (there'll be plenty of artwork-related posts to come!)
There'll also be an outfit post tomorrow, I promise - I like to dress up for exams :)

Back to studying!

I missed you guys <3

so much sparkle

Sequins, sequins, sequinsssssss!
The amount of sequined stuff I own has now grown to epic proportions, and I will NEVER RID of this madness.

Also my roommate was just getting out of bed as I was taking these...

Awkward photos......

So yeah, the bow headband, the skirt and the shoes are all sequined :) It's the best I could do to glam up this total downer of a day. Leaves and snow are not meant to fall at the same time, people! But even worse, Providence weather gods seem to prefer rain over snow, so although it was snowing a bit through the night/early morning, it is now wet and gross and cold and windy and gross. Blegh.

forever 21 skirt, Betsey Johnson tights, forever 21 shoes, Target tank, H&M cardigan, selfmade headband, NYC scarf.

Also check out my newest item on Etsy:
I love this necklace. I made it out of shampoo bottles (of course) and black and white fabric, and neon pink chain, so all in all, it is RADTASTIC and reminds me of Mondo <3

Also, I was featured the other day on Etsy's Fashion newsletter!
And if you haven't yet, LIKE my facebook page! :) Pretty soon there will be exclusive deals and steals for the holiday season up in derrr.

IT HAS BEEN WAY TOO LONG!

WOW. I am the worst blogger ever! I completely left you hanging during my week of monochrome, we haven't discussed the ATROCITY that was the season 8 finale of Project Runway, and you haven't seen my multiple Halloween costumes!

So. To make up, I will throw everything at you at once. Ya know, dodgeball style. Except maybe don't dodge these things, just acknowledge that I threw them at you. Thus forfeiting the game. HAHA YOU LOSE.

FIRSTLY. Remember my week of monochrome? It's been a while, I know.
See RED & ORANGE YELLOW GREEN & BLUE here.
Well, Wear Purple Day, on October 20, was established to show support for LGBTQ youth. To show them that there are many people who have their backs, and to let them know that it gets better.

My PURPLE outfit was pretty lame/nothing new, but that was a stressfull week. (As evidenced by my total lack of posting since then).
And I didn't even draw it. Merrrhhh.

ANYWAY. THEN. THE PROJECT RUNWAY SEASON EIGHT FINALE. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT. It's probably the most frustrating thing I can think of right now. (But go Heidi and Tim!)

THEN it was Halloween, but actually in the world of college, HALLOWEEK! If you're unaware of this phenomenon, Halloweek is just an excuse for college students to celebrate (read: drink a lot) Halloween starting Wednesday until Sunday. My Halloweek was more of a Halloweekend - I celebrated from Thursday to Saturday. Three nights of Halloween means THREE (uno, dos, tres) costumes!

NIGHT ONE:
One of my friends dressed as Hugh Heffner, and then there were five of us who dressed as Playboy bunnies. And embarrassing costume, mosdef, but two of the playboy bunnies were guys, and it was so worth it to see them in fishnets and miniskirts. I have photos but I don't think they'd approve of me posting them for all to see.

But we did make deliciousness in a cauldron!
And of course, candy :)
On Friday night, my friends and I dressed as the cast of Aladdin, and guess who (or should I say what) I was?

YEP that's me as the Magic Carpet! :D (and of course, I made it)

On Saturday night, I was a coloring book!
I just wore white tights and a white teeshirt/dress and drew outlines of random cartoon characters, doodles, etc in Sharpie, and wore markers around my neck and had people color me in throughout the night!

The sorta-kinda-fully-colored costume:

PHEW. All caught up? Etsy stuff and outfits to come! And November goals too :)

Happy weekend!

monochromatic: BLUE

Next Wednesday is Wear Purple Day, and in the days leading up, I'm going monochromatic!
See RED & ORANGE YELLOW & GREEN here.

Blue day was so easy - wearing head-to-toe blue is like, no biggie, yo.

Also I just re-watched Notting Hill while on bedrest yesterday, and there's that one outfit Julia Roberts wears when she goes to the bookstore for the last time to give Hugh Grant the Chagall painting and asks him to love her and like and IDIOT he says no and it's just super sad. But it's okay because the ending is happy :) OH THE OUTFIT - she's wearing a blue ombre top with a blue skirt and blue cardigan and it's like, totally normal.

Have a good day!

And don't forget to
WEAR PURPLE TOMORROW!

love and right triangles,
april

monochromatic: GREEN

Next Wednesday is Wear Purple Day, and in the days leading up, I'm going monochromatic!
See RED & ORANGE & YELLOW here.

These photos are terrible, I know - iPhoto is the worst application to edit photos in ever. The quality just goes KAPLUT.

blue on the way shortly!

love and right triangles,
april

monochromatic: YELLOW

Next Wednesday is Wear Purple Day, and in the days leading up, I'm going monochromatic!
See RED & ORANGE here.

Major apologies for the lack of recent updates - I've been sick in bed for a couple days. But I still managed to put on some COLLUHH (that's COLOR with an UH)
Wore this to run to CVS to get Dayquil and cough drops. :)
Then immediately got back into bed and slept for the whole day. :(

I am feeling much better today after spending so much time in bed.

Why is it that wearing head-to-toe black or white or blue is not a big deal, but if I go out in FULL ON YELLOW, people shoot me stares right and left?!

Green and blue posts to come!

april
